Pentateuch

     

Genesis - Book of beginnings.

Exodus - Going out of Egypt.

Leviticus - Religious ceremonies.

Numbers - Numbering of the people; wilderness wanderings.

Deuteronomy - Second giving of the Law; Moses’ farewell.

     

Pre-exilic

     

Joshua - Entrance into the promised land of Canaan.

Judges - Leaders whom God raised up to deliver His people.

Ruth - Foreigner who becomes an ancestress of Jesus.

1 & 2 Samuel - History of King Saul and King David.

1 & 2 Kings - History of King Solomon and the Divided Kingdom.

1 & 2 Chronicles - History of the Kings of Israel and Judah.

     

Post-exilic

    

Ezra - Judah’s leader after returning from the Babylonian captivity.

Nehemiah - Rebuilding Jerusalem after the Babylonian captivity.

Esther - Jewish Queen of Persia.

Job - Lessons in suffering; God is in control.

Psalms - 150 Hymns / Songs for worship.

Proverbs - Wise sayings of King Solomon and others.

Ecclesiastes - The vanity of the world.

Major Prophets

     

Pre-exilic

     

Isaiah - Prophecies concerning the coming Messiah.

Jeremiah - The fall of Judah and the captivity.

     

Post-exilic

     

     Lamentations - Jeremiah mourns the destruction of Jerusalem.

Ezekiel - God’s wrath against sin.

Daniel - Appointed ruler in Babylon.

     

Minor Prophets

     

Pre-exilic

     

Hosea - God’s abiding love and our unfaithfulness.

Joel - The Day of the LORD.

Amos - Judgment for sin will come.
